Ayr Burners Cycling

Sportive, Cyclocross, Youth, Adventure

Weekly Rides

Ayr Burners members meet every Saturday morning at 0930 by the Burns Centre, Murdoch’s Loan, Alloway for a weekly road ride.   Duration is typically 2-3hrs, at a social  conversational pace.  This route changes depending on weather and wind conditions, and typically finishes with a visit to the cafe on our return.  Do feel free to join us for a couple rides as a guest!

Member-led activities

Individual members frequently post ride suggestions and activities on our Facebook Group – these are publicly viewable and company is welcome!  Please check details for ride type and duration

Annual League

We run an annual league of 12 events – covering a variety of disciplines and biased towards participation rather than speed or strength.  Many activities are handicapped to ensure a more ‘competitive’ experience for everyone.   Details of each round of the league are published on our Facebook Group Forum.

Family Calendar

Between March and September we promote a series of activities aimed at younger children including our ‘Sparks’ (2-5yr olds on balance bikes), ‘Flames’ (4-8 yr olds on pedal bikes) and Family rides on easy, traffic-lite terrain.

Open Events

Our annual Cyclocross race, the Doonbank Trofee, takes place on the final Sunday of January at Rozelle Park.  The last edition took place on 28th January 2018

Our annual Ayrshire Alps Sportive takes place on the final Sunday of August, starting and finishing in Kirkmichael with 60km and 100km rides to choose from.

In 2018 we are partnering Cycle Ayrshire to deliver their ‘Ayrshire Cycle Festival’ from Troon in May.   This will include our annual Ayrshire Cycle Jumble, sessions for Sparks and Flames, a Family Treasure Hunt and a come-and-try cyclocross event.

Upcoming events

The Ronde van Ayrlaanderen

The Ronde van Ayrlaanderen

April 7, 2018, 10:00am

Monkton Cross

The Spring conjures up some truly mouth watering racing monuments for armchair cycling fans across the globe. Paris-Roubaix, Fleche Wallone, Liege Bastogne Liege, and of course the Ronde van Ayrlaanderen. Riders will have dusted off their finest pre-aged tyres, double wrapped the bar tape, and prepared meticulously with some far flung exotic training camps to ready themselves for the challenges ahead.
Our coveted cobblestone trophy lies with 2017 winner Gary van der Currie - Who looks to be the bookies favourite in 2018.
Can Gary write himself into the Classics hall of fame alongside De Vlaeminck, Museeuw, and Boonen ? Or will the steep and rough bergs of East Ayrshire prove too much for his shapely calves ?
We'll find out on the 7th of April.
In between climbs we will be cruising along at a very sedate pace - Which will give you a chance to breathe normally and have a chat. Keep it social !
Veel Geluk !

Castle Semple Loch
Lochwinnoch,  PA12 4 Map

CX/MTB ride looping from Lochwinnoch to Misty Law.

April Sunday 15th @ Castle Semple @ 10:45am for a ~11am start

Train from Ayr 09:45 changes at Kilwinning and arrives in Lochwinnoch at 10:32

Return train 14:03 and hourly thereafter.

It's around 16 miles, 2400ft climbing, really nice 99% rideable climb with a cool descent - nothing majorly technical or too gnarly so don't fear! One of my favourite off road climbs with superb views throughout, not to be missed.

Map below:

Ride approx 3hrs max.

The Wardneuk Wind-Up

The Wardneuk Wind-Up

May 6, 2018, 10:00am

Welcome to The WARDNEUK WINDUP - This is a 2 stage TT affair where we apply a complex and closely guarded handicapping system that would bamboozle even the finest of mathematical minds.
Stage one will see our combatants set off on a timed solo effort of a testing 10 minute loop with their result used to handicap their start time for stage 2... Confused ? So are we...
Any rider caught 'sand bagging' on stage 1 will be named and shamed on all available social media outlets and forced to buy the frothy coffee at the next Dunc Bunch Saturday Ride.
Stage 2 will involve a reverse loop of stage 1 - So hopefully no one should get lost.

Tour of the Alps

Tour of the Alps

June 3, 2018, 10:00am - June 3, 2018, 2:00pm

Straiton Village

Where are cyclings most iconic climbs ? It's a subject of much debate with an endless list of beauties to choose from. There is one fact we can all be sure of - Alpe D'Huez, Ventoux, Angrilu, Stelvio, and the Zoncolan are all mere pimples of little interest when compared to the majestic heights of the Ayrshire Alps. Cyclings top performers (Froome, Virenque, Armstrong etc) have yet to visit Glenalla, The Nic, or The Screws - no doubt through fear of the hallowed slopes.
We'll throw in a few segments along the way to test the legs with vital series points at stake. These are all non mandatory of course - In true Burners fashion we'll always wait at the top and the pace shall be pleasant between segments.
See you there grimpeurs
