Ayr Burners to bring major cyclocross event to Ayr

On Sunday 24th January Rozelle Park will play host to the ‘Doonbank Trofee’ – a day of cyclocross racing for all ages, featuring members of the Scottish Commonwealth Games Cycle Team.  This event is part of the National Super Quaich Series and organising group Ayr Burners Cycling are encouraging local residents to come out and enjoy the spectacle.

Cyclocross is the fastest growing and most popular branch of cycle sport in Scotland, being accessible for all ages and abilities, and always run in a safe environment.  Typically a winter sport, cyclocross sees riders negotiate a short course including obstacles such as hurdles, sand and usually a lot of mud.  It is not uncommon for riders to get off their bike and run as the fastest way to get round difficult sections.  Such is the popularity of cyclocross, that all 180 spaces for the Super Quaich races sold out in just 4 days!

The Doonbank Trofee will see almost 250 riders from right across Scotland come to South Ayrshire for a full day of racing, and just in time for the Burns’ festivities!   Competitions include youth races  for under 8s to under 16s in the morning, followed by the main ‘Super Quaich’ adult events in the afternoon.  Races are organised under the rules of British Cycling and The League International.

With thanks to Gavin McKellar (Ayr Burners Cycling / Coylton Cycling Club) for preparing this course video on a very soggy Sunday

The Super Quaich is a new four race Scottish Series based on a ranking system that will see elite riders including Gary McDonald (Hope Factory Racing) and James McCallum (Glasgow 2014 Team Scotland cyclist) and local riders from Ayrshire Clubs take on the same course.  Other rounds are in East Renfrewshire, Falkirk and Fife.

Alongside the racing, Ayr Burners Cycling have organised a host of side attractions, including a visit from the Blair Brown Rallying Team, a special balance bike track for under 5s to get involved, and a visit from the Active Travel Hub Ayr to explain more about the project transforming the town into a walking and cycle friendly destination.

The racing starts at 10:45 and will finish just after 3pm.    Ayr Burners have consulted with South Ayrshire Park Rangers to design a circuit that maintains good access around the park, exciting racing and fun spectating opportunities.  Marshals will be at designated crossing points to help spectators move around the race arena safely.

Please note, due to the large number of visitors arriving for the racing, parking at Rozelle will be extremely limited.  As well as spectating, children under 5 are invited to come along  with their bikes for a shot of the ‘Spark’s balance bike track.

Organiser JohnPaul Baxter thanked South Ayrshire Council for the support in bringing the event to South Ayrshire, and added

“It is thanks to an army of members, friends and volunteers that Ayr Burners Cycling is able to stage this event at Rozelle Park.  Planning has been ongoing since the summer so I am looking forward to welcome so many visitors to the Doonbank Trofee.  I really encourage park users and families to come out and enjoy the racing and soak up the festive atmosphere ahead of Burns’ Birthday’.
