Active Travel Hub supports Family Events

Ayr Burners Cycling are grateful for continued support from the Active Travel Hub in Ayr to promote a full calendar of family friendly cycling events in 2017.

The Hub, which recently opened at Ayr Rail Station, is a partnership project funded through Transport Scotland’s ‘Smarter Choices Smarter Places’ Fund.  It’s aim is to encourage more people to make everyday trips on foot or by bike.  Almost 60% of trips made across South Ayrshire are less than 5km – an ideal distance to travel by bike.

Since constituting in 2014, Ayr Burners Cycling has proved successful in encouraging more people to take up leisure cycling, and supporting more families to travel by bike through reaching out to parents of pre-school children.  The group were recently recognised as a local centre for Cycling UK’s ‘Big Bike Revival’   The Hub previously supported Ayr Burners in 2016, to deliver a series of 6 events that attracted over 50 families and 300 people.

The new deal will see the Burners deliver a calendar of 10 family-friendly events, with popular games sessions for 2-8 year olds alongside ‘Sea Ayr Cycles’ led rides in Ayr, Prestwick and Troon.  All the activities are delivered by trained leaders and instructors, and are open to the public (although spaces at some activities are limited).

Burners’ spokesperson John-Paul Baxter thanked the hub and added:

“We are proud that the Hub continues to recognise the impact that Ayr Burners Cycling has in the local community.  Our aims, to promote cycling opportunities in Ayrshire and to encourage cyclists to visit Ayrshire, complement those of the Smarter Choices project and we look forward to supporting each other throughout 2017”.

Alongside the events, support from the Hub will allow the group to produce maps of the ‘Sea Ayr Cycles’ family rides in Troon and Ayr, and purchase additional event equipment.
